Mission

Arts, Culture, and Communities in International Development (ACCID) at the Graduate Program in International AffairsGPIA works to foster awareness of multifaceted phenomena of culture among a new generation of development practitioners.  The group examines multiple flows, approaches and definitions of culture as well as the ways in which they are categorized and applied in human development strategies.  Recognizing culture as a dynamic and transformative force, we seek to explore culture as an indicator and facilitator of development, and its role as an active agent of social transformation.

History

ACCID was founded in order to examine and exchange ideas about cultural development. Operating loosely as a knowledge community within the program’s institutional fabric, during the 2003-2004 academic year the group attracted a core of interested GPIA members and faculty recognition.  In 2004 the group was given a modest grant by the department to undertake further cultural activities, making the environment and tools offered by the New School GPIA program that much more robust.

The majority of administrative duties taking place during the grant period were handled by Steering Committee members while project leaders were chosen consensually on a case-by-case basis. Programs and initiatives were undertaken by “point persons” in cooperation with other members of the committee or faculty. Throughout the academic year ACCID held general meetings where both administrative necessities and topical / thematic issues were addressed, and GPIA students, faculty, and interested individuals were invited to participate. A listserv for interested students and faculty was created to share ideas, resources, and bibliographies relating to culture, international affairs, and development.
